How the 52-week challenge works

Every week of the year, you put aside an amount that goes up one step: €1 in week 1, €2 in week 2, up to €52 in week 52. In total: 1 + 2 + … + 52 = €1,378. The effort starts very small, which helps you build a saving habit without thinking about it.

€5€260€6,890

Increasing or reverse: which version should you pick?

  • Increasing (1 → 52): the easiest way to get started. The last weeks are the heaviest, and if you start in January they land in December: plan ahead for them.
  • Reverse (52 → 1): the hard part comes first, while motivation is at its peak, and the end of the year gets easy. It's the version people most often finish.

No need to wait for January: you can start any week, just pick your start date.

4 tips to see it through

  • Automate it: set up a weekly transfer, or a monthly one adding up four weeks.
  • Keep the money apart: a dedicated savings account stops you dipping into it without noticing.
  • A missed week isn't a failure: catch up the following week, or tick weeks in any order that suits your budget.
  • Give it a purpose: a holiday, end-of-year gifts or an emergency fund; a concrete goal is far more motivating than a number.

Prefer a fixed amount each month? The savings goal calculator tells you how much to set aside to reach any goal by a given date. And to find the money in your budget, try envelope budgeting.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the 52-week challenge save?

Starting with €1 in week one, €2 in week two and so on up to €52, you put aside €1,378 in a year. The total scales with your starting amount: €2,756 if you start at €2, €6,890 if you start at €5.

Is it better to do the challenge in reverse?

Often, yes. Starting with €52 while motivation is at its highest means the last weeks only need a few euros, and those weeks land at the end of the year, around the holidays, when budgets are tightest.

Are my ticked weeks saved?

Yes, in this browser on this device: your tracker is still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to Souski. If you switch devices or clear your browser data, tick your weeks again or print your tracker.

Where should I keep the challenge money?

In a separate savings account that's easy to access and risk-free, so you don't spend it by mistake. A weekly standing order (or a monthly one covering four weeks) makes the challenge much easier to stick to.
